Working with Children Modules
MODULE No 1
In this module we are talking about how to provide a safe, nurturing, supportive space for children to freely express verbally, emotionally, pictorially & through 3.D mediums their feelings & their stories. Through play the child naturally expresses what is being reflected around them, how they feel inwardly, what's happening in their world & how colour, line & shape expressed on paper makes you feel better.
This module also includes how to use the seasons to go with these expressive activities & to assist in providing an inspirational & energetically appropriate environment for the child.
The environment, though encouraging free play, may set the intent to support the child, holistically. i.e. mentally, emotionally, physically & spiritually.
MODULE No 2
Sandplay has been a part of children's everyday play forever, from the tribal child to the beach, to the sandpit in the Kinder & School. Children in most cases love sand & create with it to make mountains, lake, rivers, valleys & so the list goes on.
Add natural materials & / or toys & / or figurines & a wondrous story emerges.
Through the sand of time the child creates, releases, expresses as children have through time.
Archetypal Symbology & Personal Mythology go hand in hand as we explore the use of symbols. The symbols may be from a meditation, painted, made in clay, drawn with chalk on a blackboard, drawn with a pencil or created out of playdough. The toys & figurines played with or selected may be a symbol. These symbols come from the psyche of the child & manifest before us so that we can explore through play & story.
MODULE No 3
A holistic approach to children's wellbeing would include, of course, the physical aspects of releasing & expressing through the physical body through gentle structured movements, dance, free movement, role play & physical release in a safe, supportive & productive way. This module explores ways of doing this & how to create the space to facilitate the activities.
This is an experiential day of being a part of these activities to foster self-healing & personal growth within self & to learn how to support children in theirs.
MODULE No 4
There are many wonderful activities for children from bubble blowing to making dream catchers. This part of the course provides us with knowledge of some of these activities & what each one provides for the children we are working with. We learn about creative ideas & equipment on a low budget & yet providing opportunity for children to express, release & create life skills.
Every child has a hurt, wounded child within. This inner child may be the birth baby, the toddler coping, the pre-schooler trying, the creative child stifled, the loving child unloved & so the list goes on. With you as a support facilitator “The child” heals “The wounded inner child” & you co- create an atmosphere of healing together.
A game created by my young friend Louka to assist in creating Life Skills through symbols & drawing. An experience not to be missed.
MODULE No 5
The body tells us in marvellous ways what is troubling us, concerning us or what is an issue for us. We learn here how to guide the child into exploring the issues by bringing the focus into the troubled part of the body & finding out what it is trying to tell us. This process gives us the tools to do this. We learn it in this section of the course
Within us are many buried treasures that we may not even be aware of. How do we find these treasures within with the child? We assist the child into a space of exploration using many tools to discover & help treasures to emerge.
A writing process & / or drawing process to raise awareness & allow the subconscious & / or the wounded child to speak up. An experience of self-expression for us all.
A self esteem activity to be done with a group.
Practicing using sand & figurines & the symbology associated with this is essential. In this part of the course we practice participation & facilitating in the sand stories.
MODULE No 6
Meditation & visualisation for Children, by Jennifer Cook.
This part of the course is all about meditation with children. The course helps us to learn how to:
The day teaches us about the do's & don'ts & how to create, provide & ensure a safe situation & environment for each child.
We shall co-create children's meditations with fellow students.
We shall participate in & be given children's meditations created by Jennifer Cook. The end result will be a collection of skills, tools & meditations to share with children.
This day is expanded on, in “The Advanced Working with Children” course - Part Two of the Diploma in Holistic Children's Counselling.
MODULE No 7
Case Studies
This part of the course is divided up & added to the other modules & is a time to discuss case studies, activities done with children, opportunities, difficulties & problems with your fellow students & teacher. These “Case Studies” & “Debriefing Sessions” will eventually add up to approximately 2 hours of extra time held before or between other modules.
